Environmental protection and conservation is something that Len’s Cove Marina has always taken very seriously. In 2001 the marina entered the Clean Marine Program for the first time in an effort to evaluate how well they were doing in terms of ‘green’ practices. The Clean Marine Program was created in collaboration with the OMOA, marine professionals and various Ontario boaters’ and anglers’ associations in order to evaluate and monitor the environmental practices of marinas throughout Ontario. According to the OMOA, “Eco Ratings are achieved in an audit covering more than 200 environmental practices. This audit is completed by Terra Choice Environmental Services licensed by Environment Canada. Results are then converted to a rating system with a low of one and a high of five green anchors”. In 2001 Len’s Cove was given a 65% and a three anchor rating. In the following years the marina made significant progress and jumped to a four anchor rating. This year we are pleased to announce that Len’s Cove Marina has finally reached Five Green Leaf Anchors – the highest possible rating!!
The marina was evaluated in the following 6 categories:
- Environmental Management and Policies
- Water Quality and Habitat Preservation
- Hazardous Substance Handling/Reduction
- Water Conservation
- Energy Efficiency
- Waste Reduction
Although there is always room for improvement, Len’s Cove is thrilled about this achievement. By boating at Len’s Cove and other eco-rated marina’s you are helping to support the policies that keep our waterways and marinas safe and clean. Thanks for all of your help and support!!
